Introduction & Ardyn Deep Dive

At the beginning of Rules Processing, today we are talking about this fedora wearing motherfucker* (we’ll just ignore that he’s not wearing one this time) who is sowing a lot of confusion since his spoiler reveal, Ardyn (28-002R).

*I stole borrowed this line from Jared.

Let’s start by taking a look at him:

Now, I’m not fully up on the story of Final Fantasy XV or Dissidia Final Fantasy (or any Final Fantasy game) but I can only assume Ardyn had some sort of encounter with a Balrog, died, and came back in this new white fit? Anyway, moving on to the matter at hand.

The ability we care about here is the first one, specifically:

At the beginning of Main Phase 1 during each player’s turn, if that player doesn’t put 1 Character they control into the Break Zone, Ardyn deals that player 1 point of damage.

While there are a few things to break down here, the crux of confusion comes from the first part “at the beginning of Main Phase 1 during each player’s turn”. It has brought up questions such as “is this an auto?” or “does this use the stack?” And, to answer those questions: YES or YES.

The most common form of auto-ability trigger is one beginning with “when” (which technically also includes triggers beginning with whenever as well), but auto-abilities can also start with “at”. For example, “at the end of […]” or – as is the case of Ardyn – “at the beginning of […]”. While I may sometimes moan about the Comprehensive Rules, I can at least say it covers this:

Of course, by answering the first question of “is it an auto-ability,” the second question is also essentially covered, as triggered auto-abilities must use the stack.

So worry not, at the beginning of Main Phase 1, Ardyn’s auto triggers, and then goes on the stack, allowing for things to be put on the stack in response before it resolves.

With the main point of confusion out of the way, I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least touch on some other parts that will raise questions since we are here and well this article could be a post-it note so far. As such, let’s move on to the next line in the auto-ability: “”if that player doesn’t put 1 Character they control into the Break Zone”.

To begin with, let’s get this out the way: this is not a conditional auto-ability.

Despite using the templating also used for conditional auto-abilities, this is another in the line of auto-abilities that use the same wording template but simply aren’t. Although, at least in this case it wouldn’t really work as a conditional auto, but it’s the principal of the thing REEEE.

Okay, next, let’s talk about the situation where something like Yuna (1-176H) is on the field and the Character put to the Break Zone is removed instead. Would the player still then take damage? *dramatic pause* No.

The reason for this is fairly straightforward: Ardyn doesn’t care if it actually moves to the Break Zone, only that the player puts 1 of their Characters from the field with the intention of it going to Break Zone. The fact Yuna replaces the event of it going to the Break Zone with it instead being removed from the game doesn’t change that fact.

In a similar vein, there is also the situation of what happens if something like Black Tortoise l’Cie Gilgamesh (10-069R) is picked (if the opponent controls Ardyn), as it wouldn’t actually go to the Break Zone/leave the field at all. Well, the player will still not take damage in this situation.
Ultimately, the fundamental underlying reasons for this are the same as to why removing the Character also still stops damage from being taken: all that matters is the attempt. As long as the player attempts to put something in the Break Zone (by declaring a Character to be put in the Break Zone by Ardyn’s effect), that is all that matters. It doesn’t actually matter that the card prevented itself from leaving, or another effect moved it to another zone than the Break Zone. In terms of how to tell when this is the case, the general rule comes down to how it mentions zones.
If it only mentions an end zone (typically the Break Zone), it does not care about where it ends up. If it mentions a start AND end zone, then it cares that it actually went from the start zone to the end zone.
An actually good example of this is Clione (4-125C). The first auto puts Clione into the Break Zone, but note that it only specifies the end zone, so, it doesn’t actually matter where Clione ends up, as long as it was on the field and an attempt was made to put it to the Break Zone. As such, even if Yuna (1-176H) removed it, it would still cancel the Summon’s effect. However, the second auto explicitly mentions a starting zone (field) and an ending zone (Break Zone), so in a situation where Yuna removed Clione, while it would cancel the Summon’s effect, its second auto would not trigger. Do note that things that care about something entering a zone are a different situation entirely, and realistically to go over everything would take an entire other article, so I’ll leave it at that for now because we’re mainly here to talk about how Ardyn works.

Lastly, Ardyn’s auto-ability does not target. It triggers, and then the effect is subsequently put on the stack. Then, at resolution, only then does the player pick a Character and put it into the Break Zone. As such, this means the opponent of the affected player can try and reduce the amount of Characters they have to limit the options, or the affected player could try and increase the amount of Characters they have, prior to Ardyn resolving.

Recap Rundown

Now it’s time for the Recap Rundown of Ardyn, with a simplified breakdown, and a graphic.

Simplified Breakdown

Ardyn’s first effect:

  • Is an auto-ability, which uses “at” trigger wording.
  • Does not choose. The Character is picked at resolution.
  • Is placed on the stack. Abilities and Summons can be stacked on top
  • If a player puts a Character into the Break Zone, but a replacement effect changes the zone it ends up in, the player will not take damage.

Q&A

Is Ardyn (28-002R)’s first ability an auto-ability?

Yes. Auto-abilities use “when” (including whenever) and “at” as the first word in a sentence to signify a trigger condition. Anything that uses these as the first word is an auto-ability. Anything that uses something else (such as “if” for field abilities) are not auto-abilities.

Note that this rule includes the usage of these words for new sentences inside other abilities or Summons wording. See: Cuchulainn (17-109R) and Angeal (28-060R).

Does Ardyn (28-002R)’s first ability target?

No. Anything that targets explicitly uses the word “choose.” There are 0 expectations to this rule so far. If that word is not present in the English text (ignoring translation mistakes), then it categorically does not target or choose.

Can I respond to Ardyn (28-002R)’s first ability?

Yes, as it is an auto-ability, it will go on the stack, and abilities and Summons can be stacked on top.

If I put a Character to the Break Zone, but a replacement effect puts it somewhere else, such as removing it, do I take a point of damage or not?

You will not take a point of damage in this scenario. The act of trying to put it to the Break Zone is enough to satisfy the requirement. It does not matter where it ultimately ends up.

Note that this is different from an auto-ability trigger condition that specifies something like “when [X] is put from the field into the Break Zone” as this requires the card to explicitly move from the first stated zone to the second in order for the trigger to happen at all. I won’t go into the expansive technical detail as to why – as that would take an entire article of its own to explain – but essentially it comes down to the way it is written, fundamentally if it talks about something being put to a zone as part of the effect resolving, and only mentions the end zone, then it actually does not care about it going to that end zone, rather than an attempt was made for it to go there. If instead, as is typically in trigger conditions, it mentions a starting zone and an ending zone, then it must move from the start zone to the end zone to satisfy things.

(Do note that things that care about something entering a zone are a different situation entirely.)

What about if the picked Character cannot be put into the Break Zone by abilities, such as Black Tortoise l’Cie Gilgamesh (10-069R)?

In this case, the player will not take damage, for the same reasons as if it moved to another zone: all that matters is that an attempt was made. It does not matter that Gilgamesh prevents it from moving to the Break Zone, all Ardyn’s auto-ability cares about is that you elected a Character, and that as part of the effect it tried to move to the Break Zone.

Be honest, how many of you skimmed this article for a spoiler? Haha well, spoilers, I don’t fucking have one, do I. If you’re left disappointed that your hunger for spoilers wasn’t satiated, please feel free to go complain loudly on the internet that I should have got a spoiler. Okay, don’t actually do that, or at least don’t tag any staff members, or whatever, do what you want, I’m not your mum.

Some of you out there might be wondering where the “1.0” rules test is, or any of the stuff I was planning under my Rules Progressing banner. Well, SURPRISE here it is:

Just click that link above and you’ll be able to take it. What do you mean there is no link? Try clearing your cookies.

Maybe a quick computer reboot.

Still not there? Huh weird.

Okay, but for real, the short answer is life happened, and I won’t have time to get back to working on it until around April, so don’t expect it before then, and honestly I can’t say how long it will take me. While I did have some amount done, I know myself, and I’m probably going to end up just rewriting a lot of what exists and effectively starting from the beginning again. Yay brain.

Also, yes, writing this article is my ADHD brain’s way of putting off doing some of the things I need to do before I can properly focus on Rules Progressing stuff. Heh. Classic.

Anyway, bye.
